Linux Mint 11 Will Use GNOME 3.0 By Default

As you probably know, Linux Mint 11 "Katya", the next Linux Mint version that will be based on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will not use Unity by default. Well, as it turns out, Linux Mint 11 will move even further from Ubuntu and will ship with GNOME 3.0 by default, even though Ubuntu 11.04 will use Gnome 2.32.x.

But using GNOME 3.0 doesn't mean Linux Mint 11 will ship with Gnome Shell. Linux Mint 11 will use the classic Gnome desktop by default but of course, you'll be able to use Unity or Gnome Shell if you want.

No, not Unity. We’re going for Gnome 3 using a traditional desktop layout (no Gnome Shell).

- Clement Lefebvre, the Linux Mint founder

A while back it was also decided that Linux Mint 11 will still use Rhythmbox and will not switch to Banshee.
