UMPlayer: New Cross-Platform Mplayer GUI Based On SMPlayer

"UMPlayer (Universal Multimedia Player) is the multimedia player that fills all your needs. With dozens of advanced features and built-in codecs it can handle any media format, and can play Audio CDs, DVDs, (S)VCDs, TV / Radio cards, YouTube™ and SHOUTcast™ streams and even incomplete or damaged media files."

UMPlayer is a new cross-platform SMPlayer fork. Since it uses Mplayer, it can play most video formats and comes with some very interesting features. For instance, it supports CSS skins so it's very easy to theme. For now, there are just a few themes available but more should be available soon.

Another interesting feature is that it allows you to search, play and save YouTube  videos straight from its interface. However, this seems to be broken for the moment, most probably because YouTube changed something once again, breaking Mplayer.

UMPlayer also comes with ShoutCast support and a huge list of radio stations so if you're missing this being removed from VLC, try UMPlyer. You can find this under Tools > ShoutCast.

Other features include: audio and video equalizers, take screenshot of running video, find subtitles on OpenSubtitles, audio & subtitles delay adjustment and many more. Check out the UMPlayer features page for more info.

Overall, UMPlayer has a great potential, but it's a bit buggy for now. For instance if I play a video, open the equalizer and close it, the video starts from the beginning. I've found a few other minor glitches but overall it looks pretty good and you should definitely give it a try.

LibreOffice 3.3.2, Released [Minor Bugfix Release]

LibreOffice 3.3.2 has been released today, bringing further improves and stability. This is a bugfix release and is identical to LibreOffice 3.3.2 RC2 (so if you've already installed LibreOffice 3.3.2, you basically have the latest stable version).

Here's the LibreOffice 3.3.2 changelog:

• translation and dictionary updates
• en-US fallback strings for incomplete translations
• calc: Properly invalidate cached sheet XML streams during reference update.
• Make sure these values are positive; we use them to resize arrays.

The next major LibreOffice version - 3.4 -, is expected sometime in mid May.

I for one really appreciate the "Enable import of macros for docxm" feature as I have to work with such files at work, but I'll be waiting for the PPA to be updated (the Ubuntu LibreOffice PPA currently holds version 3.3.1 for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and as usual, it will take a while until the latest version will be uploaded, but it'll get there eventually) and won't manually install the .debs because the Ubuntu packaging usually comes with some Ubuntu-specific fixes/tweaks.

Firefox 4 (Stable) Available For Download!

Firefox 4.0 (stable) has been released. Not officially, but is available for download via the Mozilla FTP servers.

The latest Firefox 4.0 stable is not yet available in any Ubuntu PPA and will most probably be uploaded to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal official repositories firstly, tested and only then uploaded to the PPAs we were talking about last week.

If you want to run Firefox 4 in Linux already, you can download it from HERE, extract the downloaded archive and double click the file called "firefox" (not firefox-bin!).

I for one will wait for the PPAs to be updated because I've always encountered issues running Firefox downloaded via the Mozilla website, especially regarding the font rendering. However, these might be related to some packages installed on my computer so it might work great for you!

To install 0AD (from SVN - currently it's alpha 4 but new SVN packages will probably be uploaded soon) use the following commands - available for Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04:

There's also a PPA repository that provides bleeding edge builds for those who want to constantly stay up to date with the latest 0AD from SVN - currently, this PPA provides the same version as in the PPA above.

I did not test the latest 0AD because I got the following message: "You are using 260.19.* series NVIDIA drivers, which may crash the game. Please upgrade to 260.19.21 or later" but hopefully you have some other graphics card / drivers.

Please note that while 0AD is available on GetDeb, that's an older version and not the latest alpha 4.

Red Eclipse 1.0 has been released yesterday. This is a "single-player and multi-player first-person ego-shooter, built as a total conversion of Cube Engine 2, which lends itself toward a balanced gameplay, with a general theme of agility in a variety of environments".

Download DraftSight - Free AutoCAD-Compatible 2D CAD Software For Linux

The first DraftSight - an AutoCAD compatible CAD software - public beta for Linux was released today.

DraftSight is a free 2D CAD application that lets you create, edit and view your DWG / DXF files. Even though it's free to use, the download page suggests that if you work for an organization that needs five or more DraftSight licenses, you should consider purchasing a Premium Pack.

I've only used DraftSight for a couple of minutes but I have to say that so far I'm impressed. And just like advertised, it was able to successfully open all of my old AutoCAD files.

DraftSight is currently available for Ubuntu (.deb), Fedora, Suse or Mandriva (.rpm) as well as Windows and Mac OSX.

Install Pinta 0.7 (Drawing / Image Editing Application) in Ubuntu

Pinta is a cross-platform drawing / image editing application inspired by Paint.NET designed to be very easy to use.

Pinta 0.7 was released with mostly bug-fixes such as: crop selection only crops to a rectangle, transparency doesn't work, paintbrush size 1 doesn't work and more. There's also a new feature: Pinta now supports outlined text.

As usual, the latest Pinta is available in the WebUpd8 Ubuntu PPA so to install it, use the following commands:

First Adobe Flash Player 11 "Incubator" Preview Available For Download

Adobe announced the Adobe AIR and Flash Player Incubator program a few days ago. This is a place where the Adobe team shares features under development or experimental with the community so they can test it and give feedback.

The first Adobe Flash Player build has already landed in the "Incubator" - but please note that this is a preview release so only use it for testing purposes. This release brings Cubic bezier curves (using the cubicCurveTo drawing API, developers can easily create cubic beziers without requiring custom ActionScript code) and new 3D APIs:

Today, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, renders thousands of non z-buffered triangles at approximately 30 Hz. With the new 3D APIs, developers can expect hundreds of thousands of z-buffered triangles to be rendered at HD resolution in full screen at around 60 Hz.

TeamViewer6 Stable For Android, Released [Remote Desktop Application]

TeamViewer is an application for remote control, desktop sharing and file transfer between computers. It runs on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux (even though it comes in a .deb or .rpm, it uses Wine which comes bundled with it).

While TeamViewer is proprietary and only free for personal use, it has the advantage of being very easy to use and comes with a cool feature: you don't need to know the IP of the computer you want to connect to: all you have to do is open TeamViewer, give the person you want to connect to your computer the user ID and password and they will be able to connect to your PC, even if you have a dynamic IP, you're behind a firewall or router and so on.

A while back we were telling you that TeamViewer released an Android application you can use to control your computer (be it Windows, Linux or Mac OSX) using your Android device. Until today, the TeamViewer Android application was in beta but today they've finally released a stable TeamViewer6 for Android. The application remains free of charge for non-commercial users just like the beta version.

Using the Android TeamViewer6 application you can easily access a computer at home or office, administer some server, reboot a computer and so on - all using your Android device.

Since our last post, TeamViewer for Android got quite a few new features and improvements: more intuitive userinterface, support for Swype keyboards, better keyboard handling, Trackball/D-Pad can be used for mouseclicks and lots of bug fixes. The latest version also feels a lot faster.

Download TeamViewer6 for Android: the application is not available in the Android Market but you can download it from the TeamViewer website: teamviewer.com (to install it, navigate to that website using your Android device and click the download link). Temple Of Tangram Is A Fun Puzzle Game For Linux, Windows And Mac OSX

"Temple Of Tangram" is a small puzzle game that was recently ported to Linux (also runs on Windows and Mac OSX). Unfortunately the game is not open source but it's free to play and includes 50 levels. You can also buy 250 additional levels for 4 euro.

At first the game seems pretty easy but as you advance you'll notice it gets more and more difficult so if you're into puzzle games, give it a try!

Adobe Flash Player 10.2 Released, Brings Stage Video Hardware Acceleration (32bit only)

Adobe Flash Player 10.2 was released yesterday with a new Stage Video API which lets you take advantage of hardware acceleration (if your video card supports it).

In my tests, using Adobe Flash Player 10.2 (still in beta at the time I've tested it) the processor usage for 1080p YouTube videos dropped from ~90% to around 20-30%. A while back we've published a post on how to take advantage of hardware acceleration for Adobe Flash Player 10.2 in Ubuntu (including a video show the performance with and without hardware acceleation) so check out that post for more info on this.

Flash Player 10.2 also comes with various CPU usage enhancements, multiple display support for full screen, native mouse cursors you can use in your applications as well as sub-pixel text rendering.

Unfortunately, this release is available for 32bit only, however a preview release is available for 64bit users.

Note for Ubuntu users: Adobe Flash Player has already been uploaded to the Ubuntu repositories so to upgrade to the latest version, all you have to do is run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Minitube 1.4 (Plays YouTube Videos Without Flash) Released, Available In The WebUpd8 PPA

Minitube is a native YouTube client for Linux (as well as Windows and Mac OS X) which you can use to watch videos without Flash Player. Further more, Minitube can also be used to download videos from YouTube.

Minitube 1.4 was released today, the new release finally bringing YouTube channels support:

Being able to watch YouTube channel in Minitube brings a whole new depth to the application. Discovering channels is easy thanks to the autocomplete popup, which suggests the most relevant channels for a given keyword.

The new version also fixes a lot of playback problems (Minitube now tries to find a fast stream and discard slow ones) and also comes with a small Linux command line feature: you can now launch an YouTube video from the command line using Minitube (you can specify a keyword or an URL).

Install Minitube 1.4 in Ubuntu form the WebUpd8 PPA

As usual, the latest Minitube 1.4 is available in the WebUpd8 PPA. Please note that I've only tested it in Maverick!

Add the PPA and install Minitube 1.4 in Ubuntu using the following commands:

How To Resize A VirtualBox 4.0+ Hard Disk (.VDI), The Easy Way [Quick Tip]

VirtualBox 4.0 got a very cool new feature that allows you to easily resize a hard disk in just a few seconds. Previously, you had to install Gparted to do this and the procedure was quite slow.

In VirtualBox 4.0 (see how to install VirtualBox 4.0.x in Ubuntu), to resize a VirtualBox hard disk image (.VDI) firstly locate the folder where the .vdi you want to resize is located - this should be under ~/VirtualBox VMs or ~/.VirtualBox/HardDisks. Then open a terminal, navigate to that folder ("cd /FOLDER/PATH") and run the following command to resize the .VDI:

VBoxManage modifyhd YOUR_HARD_DISK.vdi --resize SIZE_IN_MB

Where YOUR_HARD_DISK.vdi is the VirtualBox hard disk you want to resize and SIZE_IN_MB is the new virtual hard disk size, in megabytes. For example, the following command will resize the VirtualBox hard disk called "natty.vdi" to 12000 megabytes:

VBoxManage modifyhd natty.vdi --resize 12000

That's it! The process takes just a few seconds and you should now have a resized VirtualBox hard disk.

Android App To Send / Receive SMS Messages (And More) Using Your Computer: AndroidPC [Linux, Windows, Mac]

AndroidPC is a free Android application that lets you send and receive SMS messages (and notifies you when you receive new SMS messages through a popup), pickup or deny calls, send/receive files and urls, synchronize contacts with avatars and more - all from your computer. For now the application only works through WiFi. The computer part runs on Linux, Windows and Mac.

Even though the idea is great, AndroidPC has a few quirks: if you receive an SMS and you don't see the notification, the notification area icon doesn't change so you have to open the dashboard to see it. Also, it doesn't display notifications for calls but you can see these in the history, along with the received SMS messages. What I didn't test is the call feature so I'm not sure how that works.

Installation and usage

Download the Android part via the Android Store (that's a link to the new web store) and the PC part from HERE. Please note that you need JRE to install the PC part.

To use it, open the Android app, then on your computer right click the AndroidPC icon in your notification area, select "Open Dashboard" and here select "Connect to Android". The first time you you'll need to syncronize your Android device with your PC - to do this, click the "Synchronize" icon on your phone or go to or select AndroidPC > Synchronize on the AndroidPC dashboard on your computer. If you have trouble setting everything up, the Android PC website has a full how-to on this.

To add the application to startup in Linux, go to System > Preferences > Startup Applications, add a new startup program and under "Command" enter "javaws /path/to/androidpc.jnlp" (replace /path/to with the path to where you've downloaded androidpc.jnlp).

Sublime Text 2 Is A Nice TextMate Alternative For Linux (As Well As Windows And Mac OSX)

Sublime Text 2 is a TextMate-like text editor currently in alpha which is now available for Linux too (as well as Windows and Mac OSX). The application is not free but its evaluation period does not expire.

Sublime Text 2 comes with a very interesting interface: a sidebar for projects or files and Chrome-style tabs as well as multi-pane editing which includes horizontal, vertical and even a quad pane mode:

A very interesting feature is "Goto Anything": press Ctrl+P and type something - this will search in both filenames and lines of code across currently open files as well as recently close files. Start your search by using "#" to go to that word line, "@" for symbol or ":" for line:

The user interface also comes with a cool minimap which shows you an an overview of your files:

Other features include macros, various find tools (find in files, find in open files, incremental find), easily switch between project, multiple selection, autocomplete and lots more. And of course, everything is customizable.

Since Sublime Text 2 is currently in alpha, some features are missing. These include distraction free editing, spell checker, bookmarks, a full python API and more - but all these will be coming in the next months.

Find Duplicate Songs In Your Music Collection With dupeGuru Music Edition

dupeGuru Music Edition is an application to find duplicate songs in your music collection by scanning the filenames or tags. It is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

If the scan results seem wrong, you can tweak it: select Windows > Preferences and you'll find various criteria to base the scan on: enable or disable some tags or use the filenames instead of tags, use regular expressions when filtering, change the filter 'hardness' and more. Each result will display a match percentage so you can easily spot the exact duplicates it finds and evaluate those that do not completely match (however, if you select a maximum 'hardness', only those that match 100% will be displayed).

Once dupeGuru Music Edition finds some duplicates, you can chose what to do: remove the file, remove and make hardlinks, move the files and so on. This can be done either for each file manually or for all at once (don't worry, the first result won't be removed so you'll still have one copy of each file in your music collection).

dupeGuru Music Edition is part of a larger suite that helps you remove duplicates. Other applicaions from this suite include: dupeGuru (for any kind of files) and dupeGuru PE (for pictures). You can find them all in the dupeGuru Music Edition website sidebar.

XBMC 10.0 "Dharma" Released With Built-In Addons System, VAAPI Support, Improved VDPAU, More

XBMC is a free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media for for Linux, OSX, Windows, and the original Xbox.

XBMC 10.0 "Dharma" has been released yesterday. Most of the work in the new version has been done to the addons framework. Until XBMC 10, you had to search for new skins and addons through the forums, manually download and install it and so on - starting with version 10, installing new skins and addons got a lot easier: in XBMC 10, installing a new skin or addon is done from the XBMC interface (the Addons section).

I must say I'm loving the Grooveshark addon! There was an issue with it not playing for some reason but after chaging the playback core to "DVDPlayer" under the Grooveshark plugin settings it finally worked.

XBMC 10.0 also comes with improved XBMC's GUI Engine / Skinning Framework, initial gesture support, Broadcom Crystal HD decoders support, native support for unencrypted Blu-ray Disc playback without menus, Blu-ray Disc detection for external players, WebM support and much more.

Linux specific features in the latest XBMC 10.0 include initial support OpenGL ES 2.0, VAAPI (Video Acceleration API) support (requires VAAPI compatible hardware and drivers), OpenMAX Video Acceleration support (requires OpenMax IL compatible hardware, like Tegra2), NEON (ARM) Video Acceleration support (requires NEON compatible hardware, like OMAP3) as well as improved VDPAU Hardware Video Acceleration support and its upscaling/deinterlacing capabilities.

Install XBMC 10.0 "Dharma" in Ubuntu

XBMC 10.0 is already available in a PPA for Ubuntu users. Add the PPA and install the latest XBMC using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc

There is also a bootable XBMC Live ISO available for download which you can use to create a bootable USB with Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator or Unetbootin or just burn it onto a CD and directly boot into XBMC.

Opera 11 (Stable) Released With Extension Support, Tab Stacking, Visual Mouse Gestures And More

Opera 11 has finally been released! You probably already know what's new in the latest version of this amazing web browser, but let's recap the major new features:

Extension support: this was probably the only feature that Opera was missing for many of us (even though a lot of features for which you must use an extension on other browsers were there by default in Opera). The extensions work just like in Chromium: an icon is displayed next to the search bar (or no icon at all) and you also get an extensions page from where you can disable or uninstall the extensions (to reach this page you either have to right click any extension and select "Manage Extensions" or press Ctrl + Shift + E). You can check out the Opera extensions @ https://addons.opera.com/

Tab Stacking: yet another innovative feature from Opera, designed for those who like to keep a lot of tabs open. Tab Stacking groups multiple tabs into one tab which can then be extended with just one click. To create a stack you must drag and drop a tab onto another tab. Hovering a stack gives you a visual overview on what's inside that stack. And you can of course expand and colapse the stacks with a click. We've covered Tab Stacking (including a video) HERE.

Visual mouse gestures (mouse gestures is another genuine Opera innovation that was first introduced in Opera 5.1 in April 2001) is a face-lift to the original Opera mouse gestures: for a visual guide to mouse gestures, simply long press the right mouse button.

Humble Indie Bundle 2: Pay What You Want For 5 Excellent Cross-Platform Games

The Humble Indie Bundle is back! Just like last year, Wildfire is offering a pay-what-you-want (any price whatsoever), DRM-free bundle of 5 excellent indie games.

We don't use DRM. When you buy these games, they are yours. Feel free to play them without an internet connection, back them up, and install them on all of your Macs and PCs freely. There is no time-limit on your downloads.

The games included in the Humble Indie Bundle for this year are Braid, Machinarium, Cortex Command, Osmos and Revenge of the Titans. The games are worth $85, but like I said, you can pay whatever you want for all 5 of them. TeamViewer 6 (Remote Desktop Application) Comes With Android Support And More

TeamViewer is an application for remote control, desktop sharing and file transfer between computers. It runs on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux (even though it comes in a .deb or .rpm, it uses Wine which comes bundled with it).

The most interesting feature in the latest TeamViewer 6 is that it allows you to connect to your computer via an Android device. For this, you'll need the Android TeamViewer client installed on the mobile phone as well as the latest TweamViewer 6 installed on your computer. The Android version of TeamViewer is not available on the Android Market so you'll have to get it via TeamViewer downloads page (under "mobile"). Please note that the Android application is still in beta so you might find bugs. I didn't encounter any major bugs while testing but I've only used it for a couple of minutes.

Some info on the usage is displayed the first time you start the Android version: drag one finger to move the mouse pointer, perform single-finger taps for clicks, two-finger taps for right clicks and so on.

Other new features in TeamViewer 6 include:

• improved QuickSupport - as soon as your customer starts QuickSupport, it appears in your partner list, and you can reach it directly with a single click – without having to exchange an ID and password via telephone or e-mail
• a new QuickJoin feature - the participants now connect with you via the application and not the other way around. This saves you from entering the data of every single one of your participants.
