UnityFox, integrating Firefox to Unity

I have not had the opportunity to write in detail my views on Unity. I'll try at some point. However, it seems necessary to the extent that we find improvements to this desktop environment, we like the most. Or so I hope ...

But hey, I do not want to leave the topic. I want to tell that we integrate Firefox with Unity through an extension that will show the progress of our

GUnity: Facilitating further the configuration of Unity

Although Unity can be configured easily if we installed the Compiz configuration wizard (just go to the properties of the Unity plugin), not for all this first step is simple a priori. To further facilitate this work, we find GUnity, a small application programmed in python that allows us to easily set all these parameters of the interface Unity.

How to remove Unity in Ubuntu 11.04

It seems to be "counter-current" because Unity is the default interface in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, but many users do not like and are interested in continuing to use the classic desktop Gnome or other alternatives such as: Unity-2D or Gnome Shell (who also will see soon).

You always have the option on the home screen, disable the interface of Unity and restart with the

Reset Unity Launcher icons

Reset Compiz in Ubuntu 11.04

Reset Compiz

Resetting Compiz in Ubuntu 11.04 is a bit different then in older Ubuntu versions because its settings in gconf are under /apps/compiz-1 and not under /apps/compiz like before.

Warning: only do this if you really must and have no other option! Use both commands, or else you might not see the Unity launcher and top panel anymore! Use it at your own risk.

To reset all the Compiz settings (this includes all the plugins settings, etc.) to the default values, open a terminal (don't run it with ALT + F2! The top panel and launcher will disappear after running the first command but will show up after the second one so use a terminal) and type:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1
unity --reset

If something doesn't look right after this, log out and log back in.

How To Remove Mounted Drives From The Ubuntu Unity Launcher

Unity mounted drives launcher

All the mounted drives (this includes USB drives, NTFS and other partitions that you set to automount, etc. - basically everything that's in /media) show up in the Ubuntu 11.04 Unity launcher by default which is usually ok if you have a big monitor or if you don't have a lot of applications pinned to the Launcher. But if you use a netbook or just want more space on your Unity launcher, here's how to change the launcher behavior so that it doesn't display any mounted drives.

But firstly, here is how to unmount external devices.

How to unmount external devices

How will you unmount / safely remove mounted external media if you do this? You have at least 2 easy options:

A. Open Nautilus, right click on the mounted device and select "Eject" or "Safely remove drive".

B. Using "ejecter", an AppIndicator available in the official Ubuntu 11.04 repositories which you can install by clicking the button below:

If the above button doesn't work for your browser, open a terminal and copy/paste the following command to install Ejecter:
sudo apt-get install ejecter

Ejecter

Once installed, press ALT + F2 and enter "ejecter" to run it. To run it when your computer starts, open "Startup Applications", add a new startup item and add "ejecter" for both the name and command.

There is another appindicator called "indicator-usb" but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work anymore (when running it on my Natty installation, nothing happens).

By the way, for a huge list of AppIndicators, check out this AskUbuntu question.

Now that you know how to unmount external media easily, let's remove the mounted media icons from the Unity launcher.

How to remove mounted drives from the Ubuntu Unity launcher

1. Install dconf-tools by clicking the button below:

Or install it using a terminal:
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools

2. Press ALT + F2 and enter: "dconf-editor", then navigate to desktop > unity > devices and change the "devices-option" value from "OnlyMounted" to "Never".

Mounted media dconf

That's all - the mounted usb drives (or any other mounted volumes) should now stop showing up on the Unity launcher.

Extra tip: also remove mounted drives from your desktop

If you decide to keep the default Ubuntu 11.04 Unity launcher behavior and display the mounted media icons on the launcher, there's really no reason to have the mounted volumes show up on the desktop too. Really now, why both on the launcher and desktop?

You probably already know how to do this, since this is an option in Ubuntu Tweak but if you don't want to install Ubuntu Tweak just for this, to remove mounted volumes from your dekstop, press ALT + F2 and enter: "gconf-editor", then navigate to apps > nautilus > desktop and disable (uncheck the box) "volumes_visible".

Configuring Unity on Ubuntu 11.04, launcher behavior

We saw in a previous post how to install CCSM in Ubuntu 11.04 to access the settings for some aspects of Unity.

In this post we will see some options you can use to modify the behavior of the Unity launcher.

We said that pressing Alt+F2 and typing "about:config" went directly to the Unity configuration of Compiz and we would see a screen like this.
Let's start with the tab

Configuring Unity on Ubuntu 11.04

Install Unity Reddit Lens In Ubuntu [.deb]

Unity Reddit Lens

A Reddit user has created a cool Unity Lens for Reddit (a website where you can find what's new and popular on the web with a very active Linux section). By default it displays /r/linux, /r/ubuntu, /r/iama and of course, the main stories.

The search field for the Unity Reddit Lens is basically a filter for Reddit categories so if for instance you want to see the top stories in the /r/technology category, search for "technology":

Unity Reddit Lens

Install Unity Reddit Lens

There is no PPA to install Reddit Unity Lens but thanks to Andrew Starr-Bochicchio's packaging, I've created a .deb you can download and install in Ubuntu 11.04 (both 32bit and 64bit):

Download Unity Reddit Lens (it's called "place" instead of "lens" but anyway, it will work).

Once installed, log out and log back in.

Configuration

Unfortunately Unity Reddit Lens doesn't come with a GUI to configure it but if you want to change the categories, you can edit the /usr/lib/unity-place-reddit/unity-reddit-daemon file and replace / add more categories. For instance you can search for the word "Iama" - replace it with some Reddit you want to use instead.
