Voice Recognition in Google Chrome

Google continues to innovate in the browser Chrome, in addition to making Chrome the Operating System, There's One interesting on the Chrome browser, Google has presented the features of voice recognition in the Chrome browser.

Furthermore, the recorded voice will be processed to the speech server, and then transcribed and sent back to the user in text form.

UMPlayer Available In The WebUpd8 Ubuntu PPA

UMPlayer is a new cross-platform Mplayer front-end that supports CSS skins, easily searching, watching and downloading YouTube videos, lots of ShoutCast radio stations and more. Check out our initial post on UMPlayer for more info.

I know you like PPAs so I've uploaded the latest UMPlayer 0.9.2 (svn r162) to the WebUpd8 PPA for Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 and I'll continue to update it when major changes happen.

Add the WebUpd8 PPA and install UMPlayer using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install umplayer

A few readers have reported that using Mplayer from the Ubuntu official repositories UMPlayer doesn't work so you may want to install the latest MPlayer from the MPlayer daily builds PPA (this PPA is even linked in the MPlayer download page). Add it and upgrade MPlayer using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:motumedia/mplayer-daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you don't want to add the PPA, you can download Ubuntu .deb files @ UMPlayer download page (there are also openSUSE, Fedora and Mandriva .rpm files as well as a Windows installer available for download).

Quickly Share A Folder Over HTTP With JetHTTP

Want to share a folder with someone in your network or over the internet? The easiest way to do it (especially if the folders include some large files) is probably using a tool such as JetHTTP.

JetHTTP is a small GUI-based web server for serving static content over HTTP an you can use it to share a folder with just one click.

By default, the application uses port 8081 and will share your /var/www folder but these can be changed in the settings. Once you set the folder you want to share, simply click "Start server" and then give the person you want to share the folder with the link (http://YOUR-IP:8081). You can stop the server at any time by clicking the "Stop server" button.

Please note that JetHTTP doesn't use any authentication method so do not share anything private. Also, make sure you stop the server once you're done.

Install JetHTTP in Ubuntu

JetHTTP comes with a PPA you can use to install it in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and 10.10 Maverick Meerkat:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:george-edison55/george-edison
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install jethttp

Unfortunately, the JetHTTP package in the above PPA doesn't come with a .desktop file (but that's available in BZR along with other new stuff like initial POST support so if you know how to compile a program, you could use the latest code) so you'll have to run it by pressing ALT + F2 and then entering:

JetHTTP

If you're not using Ubuntu, you can grab JetHTTP via Launchpad (BZR).

Set Up Sparkleshare With Your Own Server

Last week we saw how to install Sparkleshare in Ubuntu from a PPA. As a reminder:

Sparkleshare is a tool to synchronize your files in the cloud - like Dropbox or SpiderOak - but unlike these, Sparkleshare is open source and allows you to use your own server. Sparkleshare uses GIT so if you delete/modify some files by accident, you can easily revert the changes.

If you want to use Sparkleshare to syncronize files with your server, the set up is a bit more complicated so I though I'd make a separate post for this. Using the steps below, you should be able to use Sparkleshare with your own server (make sure you've firstly installed Sparkleshare on your computer!).

How to set up Sparkleshare with your own server

1. Stop sparkleshare on your computer. To get Sparkleshare to sync with your server, you'll need to create a paswordless SSH key which you'll use to login to your server.

Firstly install openssh-client on your computer (obviously you must have Sparkleshare installed already):

sudo apt-get install openssh-client

Now generate a key pair if you don't have one already:

ssh-keygen -t rsa

Do not enter a password for the key (just press the ENTER key).

2. Copy the key to the server:

ssh-copy-id USER@SERVER

3. Connect to the server and install GIT (if it's not already installed):

ssh USER@SERVER
sudo apt-get install git-core

4. Now let's set up the Sparkleshare GIT folder on your server:

git init --bare sparkleshare.git

5. Back on your computer, go into the Sparkleshare folder and clone the remote Sparkleshare GIT repo:

cd ~/SparkleShare/
git clone USER@SERVER:sparkleshare.git

6. You can now start SparkleShare from the menu - copying new files in your ~/Sparkleshare/sparkleshare folder should now sync them with your server (without requesting for a password). To set up Sparkleshare sync on multiple computers, simply follow steps 1, 2 and 5 on each computer.

Haguichi (Hamachi GUI) Reaches Version 1.0.5

Haguichi, a GUI for Hamachi (including Hamachi2) has reached version 1.0.5. Here's the complete changelog:

• Nickname is now being remembered by Haguichi itself and is always set after each login, because Hamachi² seems to suffer from amnesia.
• Now using regular expressions instead of splitting strings when parsing the network list (Fixes bug #706567).
• Now using separate threads for the following actions: change nickname, jJoin network, create network, change network password, approve join request, reject join request, evict member, leave network, delete network
• Added notification for when Hamachi loses connection.
• Added option to manually update the network list.
• Added check to prevent multiple parallel update cycles.

As you probably know by now, we are maintaining the official Haguichi PPA so you can already install the latest Haguichi 1.0.5 in Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 or 11.04 using the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/haguichi
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install haguichi

Firefox 5 Mockups Reveal "Site-Specific Browsers", Updated Location Bar

While Firefox 4 is still in beta and even though it seems it will be released in March, it might actually be further delayed, the first Firefox 5 mockups are already starting to emerge.

It seems that Mozilla will adopt something called "site-specific" browsers (this is basically the old Prism with a new look) or "desktop apps" starting with Firefox 5, which will have an integrated site menu. Here are some mockups to understand how that will work:

Further more, Firefox 5 which is scheduled to be released by the end of the first half of this year (hopefully we won't start seeing delays like for Firefox 4 again) will get an updated search bar that will sport a 240 pixels width and instead of the favicon it will use the search provider main color (green for Google, purple for Yahoo, yellow for Bing and so on):

These are just the initial mockups so things might change. Also, we'll probably see a lot more changes in Firefox 5 as well as 6 and 7 - because Mozilla is planning to release all of these next year.

Evernote For Linux: Nevernote

Evernote is an service/application you can use to store notes, images and all kind of information (like audio, handwritten or video notes) for retrieving later. It supports search and tagging and most importantly: you can sync everything between computers - further more, Evernote supports mobile devices too like iPhone, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry or Android and there's a web interface too and a clipping bookmarklet to pull anything into your netbook. But unfortunately there's no official Evernote application for Linux.

Nevernote is an open source clone of Evernote that works on Linux. While Evernote now runs on Linux through Wine, the application is quite slow so you may want to try Nevernote.

Nevernote supports most of the Evernot features so you can easily drag and drop images or PDF files, tag or preview notes. Unfortunately, there are some features which are not supported by Nevernote: you can't write ink notes or record webcam notes, there is no screen clipper (but you can use Shutter instead!), emailing only sends a plain text note and also the sharing feature is missing.

On the other hand, there are also quite a few features that Nevernote provides which are not available in Evernote, such as: changing the background or title of any note, highlight text, encrypt the database at the database level to improve security, theme support, display PDF files inline or as a file icon you can click later, rotate images, close netbooks and many more.

Further more, Nevernote supports customizing shortcuts, but not through the user interface. To see how you can configure the keyboard shortcuts (there are already some default keyboard shortcuts so you only need to do this if you want to change them), download the Nevernote source, extract it and in nevernote/usr/share/nevernote read the "shortcuts_howto.txt" file. There are also some example shortcuts in the same folder ("shortcuts_sample.txt").

Nevernote would be enough and I wouldn't miss any Evernote feature if only it would look better - there's always the web interface / bookmarklet for most of the other stuff I need. Because Nevernote is written in Java / Qt, it doesn't integrate well with the Gnome desktop and looks... let's call it "weird" (I'm being nice here). But don't get me wrong, Nevernote is actually great - or at least better then using the Evernote client under Wine, as long as you only want to take text notes and insert some files and get them synchronized with Evernote. If you want more, you're out of luck for now.

On the other hand, Evernote for Windows doesn't look too good when used on Linux either:

Hopefully Nevernote will integrate better in the future or who knows, we might even get Evernote for Linux.

Note: to get Nevernote to synchronize your notes with Evernote you'll have to go to Edit > Preferences and under "Connection", enter your Evernote userid and password and select a sync interval (I also suggest selecting "Automatic Connect" and "Synchronize on Shutdown").

Easily Upload Files / Images To RapidShare, ImageShack Or TwitPic With PyShare

PyShare is a collection of scripts that let you upload images, screenshots or other files to ImageShack, TwitPic or Rapidshare via right clicking the files in Nautilus.

The application then displays a list of links in the notification area so you can easily copy the direct links, HTML, forum code and so on:

Further more, PyShare supports uploading to your account for all the 3 services (RapidShare, ImageShak and Twitpic).

Install PyShare

1. Install the dependencies:

sudo apt-get install python-pycurl scrot

2. Download PyShare from Gnome Look and extract it.

3. In the PyShare folder, double click the "install.sh" file and select "Run in terminal" - this will install the scripts. Please note that you cannot remove the PyShare folder because the install script only creates links to the files so this is required for it to work.

Once installed, right click a file in Nautilus and select Scripts: you'll then be able to select "SendFiles" to directly upload a file", or take a screenshot and upload it automatically.

Install Transmission BitTorrent Client 2.21 In Ubuntu (PPA)

Transmission 2.20 was released a few days ago and today it was finally uploaded to the Transmission PPA (the version in the PPA is actually 2.21 which only fixes some compiling issues with 2.20). The new version comes with some very interesting features like remembering downloaded files when a drive is unplugged, better support for running a script when a torrent finishes downloading, shutdown transmission sessions via RPC and more.

Other changes include:

• File re-verification is no longer needed in some situations
• Improve support for running scripts when a torrent finishes downloading
• Interface tweaks
• Support ZIP and other compression formats in the blocklist downloader

To install Transmission 2.21 in Ubuntu (currently the PPA was only updated for Ubuntu Maverick and Natty, but packages for older Ubuntu versions will follow), run the following commands in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:transmissionbt/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install transmission-gtk

When upgrading, you may encounter a problem about a file in some other package being overwritten by a file in transmission-common. Fix it using the following command (you may need to change the version in the filename to yours):

sudo dpkg -i --force-all /var/cache/apt/archives/transmission-common_2.21-0ubuntu1.10.10.1_all.deb

Use The Ubuntu Font With Any Website / Browser In Ubuntu

WebUpd8 reader TP has sent us a tip regarding a post he wrote about getting all the websites to use the Ubuntu font on your system (or whatever fond the user sets as the default Desktop font - this should work with any browser you use) instead of the font they have specified in the CSS rules:

I have never liked the way most websites look on a default installation or Live CD, it doesn't do anything to impress the new user. I feel this is largely due the fonts mess in Linux.

On my blog I have a detailed explanation of getting the Ubuntu font to be the default font used by web browsers to display websites. The experimentation was carried out on Maverick.

I was blown away by how beautiful websites looked when they used the Ubuntu font. The font was fuller and smoother.

WebUpd8 PPAs Updates: Jupiter 0.0.48, Haguichi 1.0.4

Jupiter

Jupiter is an applet which allows you to switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on. But most importantly it allows your Eeepc netbook to take advantage of SHE (Super Hybrid Engine).

Jupiter 0.0.48 has been released yesterday and is now available in the Jupiter WebUpd8 PPA. This update corrects multiple issues with WIFI and Bluetooth toggles. Also, Jupiter now has an website - check it out @ jupiterapplet.org.

Popular WiFi Scanner For Windows "inSSIDer 2" Is Now Available For Linux!

Easily Upload Images To Facebook Using Nautilus Facebook Uploader

Nautilus Facebook Uploader is an application to upload pictures (it supports multiple pictures at once) to Facebook via Nautilus. Using this application, you'll be able to post photos to your wall, upload photos to an existing album or create a new album. Support for setting a profile picture should be coming soon.

Installation

Download and extract Nautilus Facebook Uploader, then double click the "install.sh" file and select "Run in terminal". The installation script will now move the files to the right folders and install the required dependencies.

Usage

Once Nautilus Facebook Uploader has been successfully installed, right click an image (or multiple images) and select Scripts > Upload to Facebook. The first time you use the script, you'll have to authorize it - so click the Authorize button. A new tab should open in your default browser redirecting to Facebook (where you must log in if you're not logged in already) and then click the "Allow" button. Then copy/paste the URL from the browser address bar into the Nautilus Facebook Uploader dialog.

Now you can click the "Generate/Refresh List" button. The first time you do this, you'll have to enter your username (NOT EMAIL ADDRESS). If you don't know your facebook username, CLICK HERE (see the url under "Your username has been set").

And finally, select where to upload the images (an album or your Wall) and click "Upload" - the images you've previously right clicked will now be uploaded to Facebook.

Note: the application works ok for me using Chrome, however the Nautilus Facebook Uploader page mentiones there might be issues when authorizing the application using Firefox. To overcome this, you could set a different browser as default when authentificating Nautilus Facebook Uploader or follow the instructions @ Nautilus Facebook Uploaded Gnome Look page.

Do You Have Limited Internet Plan? Use NTM (Network Traffic Monitor)!

NTM (Network Traffic Monitor) is a great application for those who have a limited internet plan. It can monitor the inbound, outbound and total traffic, the time spent online and various other very useful features for limited / mobile internet connections. Futher more, it can automatically disconnect your computer when the limit is reached (for cases when exceeding the limit is very expensive).

NTM also allows you to set the period you want to monitor and get a daily traffic report as well as daily averages.

Dropbox Share 0.2.3 Gets Emblems For Shared Files And Folders [Nautilus Script]

Thanks to theradioboy's tip, I've implemented emblems for the shared files and folders in the latest Dropbox Share Nautilus script (v0.2.3).

Dropbox Share now automatically adds emblems to the files you've shared (even though these files are not in your Dropbox folder) and removes them when you unshare the files. Please note that you need to unshare the files via the Dropbox Unshare script (it's also included in Dropbox Share package - all you have to do is select the files you want to unshare, right click them and under "Scripts" you'll find both "Dropbox Share" and "Dropbox Unshare") or else the emblems won't be removed!

Because there is no way to refresh Nautilus by directly calling it via command line, I've used a "hackish" way to do it: the script will send "F5" to the window (just as if you've pressed it) which should instantly make the file emblems show up. If for some reason the emblems are not updated automatically, simply press F5.

Foobnix 0.2.2 Comes With Lots Of Changes, Ubuntu PPA

Foobnix, a very interesting music player we wrote about a while back (check out that post for a complete review) has been updated to version 0.2.2 and also it now comes with an Ubuntu PPA.

Since our last Foobnix post, there have been many changes to this Linux music player: most parts have been re-written, the interface has been revamped - the info panel being a lot more clear and easy to use now, global hotkeys, proxy support, configurable notification area icon, 100 new radio stations have been added and many other changes.

Still, even though there have been so many changes to Foobnix, there is still a lot of work to be done. Also, the controls look weird with most themes because they don't expect the menu to be on the same row as the controls (it especially looks ugly with Orta theme).

Before you start criticizing its "special feature" (online music - I won't get into detail here, see our initial Foobnix post for more info), you should know there's more to Foobnix then this: Foobnix features a really unique user interface, with the menu next to the controls, complete Last.fm info such as: similar artists, similar songs, top 50 songs and so on, and a very interesting notification area popup (among many others). So give it a try and if you don't like the online music feature, simply don't use it.

To add the Foobnix PPA (available for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat only for now), use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:foobnix-player/foobnix
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install foobnix

If you're using Ubuntu Lucid, you can try installing the Maverick .deb files (it worked fine for me, however I have many PPAs added so I'm not 100% sure it will work in Lucid):
