Securing The Kernel via Static Binary Rewriting and Program Shepherding

Abstract: Recent Microsoft security bulletins show that kernel vulnerabilities are becoming more and more important security threats. Despite the pretty extensive security mitigations many of the kernel vulnerabilities are still exploitable. Successful kernel exploitation typically grants the attacker maximum privilege level and results in total machine compromise.

To protect against kernel exploitation, we have developed a tool which statically rewrites the Microsoft Windows kernel as well as other kernel level modules. Such rewritten binary files allow us to monitor control flow transfers during operating system execution. At this point we are
able to detect whether selected control transfer flow is valid or should be considered as an attack attempt. Our solution is especially directed towards preventing remote kernel exploitation attempts. Additionally,many of the local privilege escalation attacks are also blocked (also
due to additional mitigation techniques we have implemented). Our tool was tested with Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (under both virtual and physical machines) on IA-32 compatible processors. Our apparatus is also completely standalone and does not require any third
party software.

2011 Data Breach Investigations Report

Executive Summary

361 million >> 144 million >> 4 million. Thus goes the tally of total records compromised across the combined caseload of Verizon and the United States Secret Service (USSS) over the last three years. After four years of increasing losses culminating in 2008’s record-setting 361 million, we speculated whether 2009’s drop to 144 million was a fluke or a sign of things to come. 2010’s total of less than four million compromised records seems to suggest it was a sign.But of what? And is it a permanent change in direction or a temporary detour?To help us answer that, we are very glad to have the United States Secret Service (USSS) back with us for the 2011 DBIR.

Additionally, we have the pleasure of welcoming the Dutch National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) to the team. Through this cooperative effort, we had the privilege—and challenge—of examining about 800 new data compromise incidents since our last report (with 761 of those for 2010). To put that in perspective, the entire Verizon-USSS dataset from 2004 to 2009 numbered just over 900 breaches. We very nearly doubled the size of our dataset in 2010 alone!

Mozilla Firefox Internals & Attack Strategies

This paper aims to detail some of the techniques and methods that exist to subvert a fully patched and functioning browser Firefox. This aims to provide insight to developers and end users on some methodologies which could be used by malicious users. We will understand some of the basic important components that make up the Mozilla platform and various attacks that can be targeted against it.
Firefox is a trusted browsing platform used by millions across the globe. It is a platform that is used by experts and novices. One of the biggest advantages and reason for massive success of Mozilla is an extensible plug-in model which allows the developers add additional features to the Mozilla Firefox environment than what was perceived by the original writers. Our topic of discussion is focused around these extension modules and how a malicious developer can use some of these powerful features to subvert a Firefox and the underlying systems. The Code of extension runs with the same privilege that the browser enjoys.

Intro
Lets continue to research possible security problems in case of using popular web technologies in browser extensions. Opera is one of the most powerful web browsers today.It has fast rendering and JavaScript engines and a lot of other useful features. For a long time Opera was all-in-one thing in opposition to Mozilla Firefox with its addons. But now when one more strong player called Google Chrome comes into the game in browser's market, Opera decided to support extensions too (yes-yes, I remember about Opera widgets).

PHP LFI to arbitratry code execution via rfc1867 file upload temporary files

Just another PHP LFI exploitation method

This article describes a method of taking advantage of a .php script Local File Inclusion vulnerability. It does not describe any vulnerability in the PHP engine itself, nor does it describe any new vulnerability class.

Summary:
- this method works like a charm on Windows (http://site/?page=C:\Windows\Temp\php<<)
- trick with << in FindFirstFile ftw!
- this method works in some very specific cases on Linux-based OS'es (and doesn't work in other cases)
- GetTempFileName in WinAPI is surprisingly weak
- but mkstemp from GNU lib C is surprisingly strong

Credit Card skimming and PIN harvesting in an EMV world

Chip & PIN is definitely broken

At the CanSecWest security conference held in Vancouver last week, four security researchers demonstrated the practicability of chip card skimming attacks – both with an insecure class of chip (SDA) and with a class that has been considered secure (DDA). EC and credit cards chipped according to EMV specifications are designed to hamper "skimming", an attack method which involves intercepting a user's card and PIN data.

Skimming attacks aren't an altogether new idea and can also be carried out via such devices as keyboard attachments. In their presentation, entitled "Credit Card skimming and PIN harvesting in an EMV world" , however, the four researchers describe how a flat circuit board inside the card slot can be used to intercept and manipulate the communication between terminal and chip in order to obtain a user's PIN. A circuit board is far more discrete than a wobbly, glued-on attachment.

Exposing the Lack of Privacy in File Hosting Services

The (in)security of File Hosting Services

Abstract
File hosting services (FHSs) are used daily by thousands of people as a way of storing and sharing files.These services normally rely on a security-throughobscurity approach to enforce access control: For each uploaded file, the user is given a secret URI that she can share with other users of her choice.In this paper, we present a study of 100 file hosting services and we show that a significant percentage of them generate secret URIs in a predictable fashion,allowing attackers to enumerate their services and access their file list. Our experiments demonstrate how an attacker can access hundreds of thousands of files in a short period of time, and how this poses a very big risk for the privacy of FHS users. Using a novel approach, we also demonstrate that attackers are aware of these vulnerabilities and are already exploiting them to get access to other users’files. Finally we present SecureFS, a client-side protection mechanism which can protect a user’s files when uploaded to insecure FHSs, even if the files end up in the possession of attackers.

Abstract: History sniffing attacks allow web sites to learn about users’ visits to other sites. The major browsers have recently adopted a defense against the current strategies for history sniffing. In a user study with 307 participants, we demonstrate that history sniffing remains feasible via interactive techniques which are not covered by the defense. While these techniques are slower and cannot hope to learn as much about users’ browsing history, we see no practical way to defend against them.

A server can choose to use this information in serving the request.
